The University operates access control at some of its gates. Entry through these gates is granted based on dedicated permissions assigned at the individual level. Some permissions are automatic and derived from the person’s status, such as a student in Faculty X or an employee in Unit Y, while others require specific configuration. Identification of each individual at the access controllers is performed using the MyHUJI application by Mobitti. Support may also be provided through dedicated physical cards, stickers, or chips.
Installing the MyHUJI Application
The application is available for download from the app stores for both Android and iPhone devices.
For example:
Using the MyHUJI Application for Access Control
The application can communicate with the access controller using NFC and Bluetooth components. Use of these components must be approved during application installation. When logging in to the application for the first time, the user will be asked to select the appropriate profile. Under the student profile, several action options are available, including communication with the gate controller. Under the employee profile, the main current option is communication with the gate controller.
For example:
- The initial screen where the user is required to select the relevant profile:
- Application confirmation after selecting a profile:
- Door-opening control under the employee profile:
- Door-opening control under the student profile:
- Approval for use of location, Bluetooth, and NFC
After the first tap on the door-opening control, the following screen will appear. The user must approve activation of the marked components and, if the device has NFC, verify that it is enabled. For example:
Gate-Opening Options by Operating System – Android and iPhone iOS
The different operating systems vary slightly in how the MyHUJI application can communicate with the gate controller.
-
Android operating system:
- Supports both NFC and Bluetooth
- Using NFC does not require opening the MyHUJI application or tapping the door-opening control. The phone only needs to be unlocked and held close to the card reader.
- Bluetooth can be used if the phone does not have an NFC component or if NFC is turned off. In this case, the user must open the MyHUJI application, tap the door-opening control, and bring the device close to the card reader.
-
iPhone operating system – iOS:
- Currently supports Bluetooth only. Support may likely be expanded to NFC in the future.
- Using Bluetooth requires opening the MyHUJI application, tapping the door-opening control, and bringing the device close to the card reader. If the device is held too close to the reader, the iPhone Wallet may open. In that case, simply move the device slightly away from the reader.
Possible Issues
1. Issue with allocation of the required internal license
The overall solution integrates several providers, and working with them requires license allocation. It is possible that no available licenses remain with one of the providers, or that the license allocation process failed. In such a case, an alert icon will appear on the door-opening control, along with the following message.
Important Sometimes the license is not downloaded due to a block by the communications provider. Therefore, if the message remains for more than a minute or two, it is recommended to switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data, or vice versa, and give the system another opportunity to download the required license. If the alert icon still appears, the user must sign out of the MyHUJI application by tapping the icon in the upper-left corner and then selecting Sign out. After that, uninstall and reinstall the application. This action will attempt to allocate the license again, and in many cases reinstalling the application successfully allocates the required license.
2. The gate controller does not approve the opening attempt
Gate opening is based on the permissions required at the individual level. If the gate controller successfully detects communication with the application, indicated by a beep or purple light, but the gate does not open at the end of the process and a red light appears on the reader, the specific gate and the individual who attempted to pass through it must be checked.
3. Employee not currently eligible to use the application
Employee eligibility is currently limited to active standard employees only. Pensioners are excluded at this stage and will receive an appropriate message when authenticating under the employee profile.
4. Apple devices – Apple Pay opens automatically when the device is held close to the gate reader
When an Apple device is held close to the reader, it identifies the transmitted frequency as something that requires Apple Pay to open. In this situation, move the device slightly away from the reader, tap the door-opening control in the MyHUJI application, and communication will then take place via Bluetooth, allowing the application to communicate with the reader without interruption.
